Hello! Not only am I NOT dead but I’ve also actually knitted something and finished it! (I’ll wait while all two people who still read this blog pick themselves up off the floor)  This is the Boneyard Shawl from Westknits – knit in 2 skeins of SWS Karaoke with a size 8 circular – and I LOVE it!  Many thanks go to the fabulous Shadkitty for finishing this shawl before me and getting my wheels turning on knitting my own. I decided to go with the yarn-over version (rather than the non-holey version) because I love the detail that the centered holes make. After seeing the finished object, I’m glad that I did because the purl ridge accent (which I added at random because I totally forgot I was supposed to be counting rows) doesn’t show up that great in the variegated yarn.

The finished shawl blocks out about 45×25 inches with about 16 inches from cast on edge to the point in the center – a really nice “mini-shawl” size which will be awesome for fall & winter.   I love the way this looks with the point forward (which is how I wear my triangular scarves as well) and will probably NOT be wearing this as a traditional shoulder shawl.  It also looks awesome worn as a headwrap!

The days tend to sort of blend together here at Chez Mousie and I often realize that a whole week has gone by when I’m being asked for ice cream money “again”. (me: “Ice cream money… didn’t I just give you some?” munchkin:  “No, silly Mama- that was last Friday!”) I’m going to have to chalk that up to being one of the many ‘dangers’ of being a stay at home mom…

Last weekend I celebrated with Lady Deathwatch & Little Black Crow for the 2nd annual Internet Thankfulness Tea.  I’m thankful for many things this year…. including HEAT!! I’m also thankful that we found such a great house in a nice neighborhood. Everyone is very happy here in the new Chez Mousie.. especially the kitties! My husband has gotten some really good leads on some new business opportunities.. I’m hoping for a prosperous year!

I didn’t end up finishing my Liesl sweater for the Ravelympics..  I didn’t even come close, to be honest.  My hand/wrist started hurting and I started making stupid mistakes in the pattern because of feeling rushed with the time limit which made the knitting less than enjoyable.  I’m hoping to get it done in time to wear this spring though.. its a bit too cold here in GA for a lacey sweater.

I did however finish spinning some fiber that has been on my wheel since before we moved in November.. its from Spunky Eclectic (“grand opening 2007″ is its name) and is some sort of ‘wool blend’. I don’t have any idea of yardage yet b/c its still hanging out on the bobbin after plying. No plans for this yet other than the fact that its going to be knit up for sale.. the colors aren’t ‘me’.

Poor blog- totally neglected while the whole family nurses various illnesses and life speeds by!  I’ve really wanted  to start blogging a few times a week with various things I come across online and put more of the stuff floating around in my head into the blog but life is sort of disagreeing with these plans.

This weekend is the Second Annual Internet Thankfulness Tea Party – with actual tea, food and fancy dress- (not related to political mumbo-jumbo of any kind) – Please join Lady Deathwatch, Little Black Crow and myself  in a virtual tea this weekend!

In knitting news- I joined LSG’s Team Tweasel and am competing in the Sweaterboard Cross for the Ravelympics this year.  I decided that I’d make Liesl and I’m using Lion Brand Wool-Ease in Olive to make a 3/4 sleeve version.  I don’t know if I’ll have enough yarn or whether I’ll actually complete it but I’m going to try anyway.  I’m actually farther than this photo shows – I have a few inches to go before I separate the arms from the body… I put the sweater onto a second circular needle to try it on and nearly lost the whole center of the sweater when the needles slipped.

It’s yesterday’s news at this point but here’s some Friday Eye Candy in the form of the awesome snowman that Munchkin built last weekend.  It was a big deal snow storm for this region and we got about 4 inches here in North GA – it was NOT mixed with rain or ice this time and we had a proper snowstorm which coated the trees and was perfect for snowmen & snowballs.

My creation

Twenty-six days after the new year and I’m finally getting to this re-cap post! Apparently just because you’re the sort of person who has a constant monologue (mono-blog?) in your head doesn’t mean that it will automatically post to the internet where other people can see it…  I’m very bad about that and definitely must work on it in the future!

Going back in my blog the following things happened in 2009:

  • I  finished a few Woolly Wormhead hats and became obsessed with knitting snoods.
  • I attended a virtual tea party (hope to do it again this year!) with Lady Deathwatch & friends
  • I dreaded my hair (again) and began stretching my earlobes in an attempt to look on the outside like  I feel on the inside… an ongoing project for sure.
  • I tried my hand at yeast dough making and started baking like a crazy person – first pretzels, then pizza dough, cinnamon bread, challah, cinnamon rolls & ranch dinner rolls.  I haven’t stopped yet!
  • My blog turned FIVE, my kid turned EIGHT, and I became THIRTY TWO.
  • We welcomed new kitty Captain Jack to the family
  • We went to Florida on a family trip and found out while we were there that our rental house had been foreclosed upon.
  • We packed up our house and moved to a new location in the middle of the school year and right before the Thanksgiving holiday with the help of friends.
  • I learned a lot about what I am capable of handling and when I need to ask for help.

So far in 2010:

  • I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about the direction I’d like to go with my small business – I put everything on hold when we moved and figured it was a good time to do some thinking and future planning.
  • Captain Jack went to the vet and came back …um..minus some parts… but more of a snuggle bug and less of an annoying screaming bastard who pees on everything.
  • I’ve started to get a bit of a hold on  my fear of crowds and driving – I even managed to attend a movie on a Friday night with a friend!

Pattern: Panta
Yarn: Plymouth Encore
Needles: size 7 US
Mods: stopped before the last increase b/c it was getting too large. fudged the rest of the numbers to make the headband work.

When I get stressed and overwhelmed, I knit. I knit A LOT. This pattern (thermis) was bought before we left for our trip to Florida.. something simple and mindless to knit while on vacation or in the car during the 7 hour drive but it never saw the outside of my knitting bag for the whole trip.  Instead I cast on for it on Friday night in the midst of a total freak out with a partial ball of LB Wool-Ease and size 6 circs… this morning at 9am, I had this:

cowl 005

I didn’t do any mods to the pattern except for the occasional bungle of the stitch count (I’m going to say it makes the whole thing more ‘organic’.. go with me on this, k?)  and I knit the “small” size.   Unfortunately I have to wear the cowl like this :

cowl 003

I don’t know.. it might be an improvement.. or I might be wearing it wrong.  Wearing it like this  DOES however make me feel better about my impending move (utter denial- I haz it) AND keeps me warm since its suddenly THIRTY FIVE FREAKING DEGREES at night here in Georgia (really? seriously? Just push the crazy girl in the heatless house over the edge already would you?) which is totally unheard of in mid-October.  I keep hearing that we’re going to have a horribly cold winter this year..  the possibility of living in a  house with heat is the only thing that’s keeping me motivated about moving.

If anyone needs me… I’ll be in my cowl.

Munchkin started school on the 10th and we’ve been dragging along this past week while trying to get up at the ass crack o’dawn. It has NOT been easy this year to get either one of us up at 645am and the fact that the bus comes 20 minutes earlier this year is not lost on us. Even the kitties have no interest in getting up and getting fed that early in the morning… this morning I had to remove a sleeping Jack from my feet where he was snuggled in and clinging like velcro to my blanket.

Since the weather is edging slowly into cooler temps I’ve been on a big fall cleaning kick here at Chez Mousie and one of the things I’ve been trying to do is  finish up some of the UFO’s that have been marinating in my knitting basket.   This Fake Isle hat is one of the oldest UFO’s hanging around…   I started it in 2007!

Fake Isle collage

The black yarn is Caron Simply Soft and the colored yarn is Noro Silk Garden I was gifted in a destash. I ended up finishing up knitting the hat on DPNs because my size 7 circ was already in use.. and man am I spoiled with magic loop! The hat is now finished, blocked, and is going to be put away for my sister-in-law’s Hanukkah present. Even though its not my color choice, I’d probably keep it if I could fit it on my head.. but the combo of mellon head + dreads won’t let it stay with me, and I did promise my SIL this hat TWO YEARS ago. *sigh*

Thanks for the comments on the WW post.. it was the dryer that is the new addition to the household and I’m SO excited to have it.   My mother in law ended up with a new set and gave me her old dryer for FREE… the only cost and headache ended up being finding a cord for it which worked with my 1940′s house.  Because of trying to keep our energy costs down I won’t be abandoning my wash lines any time soon but the new (to us) dryer will be very useful this winter when it rains and rains for days as it does here in GA and my house isn’t warm enough to dry clothing.

jackDOH

Has it been THAT long since I’ve posted? DOH! (says Jack…) I’ve been crazy busy here lately and Munchkin goes back to school in 10 days! We’re totally not ready for summer to be over, that’s for sure. I’ve mostly been running around like a lunatic while trying to keep Chez Mousie from going down the proverbial crapper. I’ve been quiet so as to avoid turning this place into a 24/7 bitch-fest and running commentary on the suckitude of the economy, our lack of jobs and money, and blah blah blah… See- no one wants to read that, not even ME!

I have finished a few things since I posted last..

Fuji 017

This is Sloochie from Woolly Wormhead knit in my own Two Paws Handspun – one of the few two ply yarns I have left. (Admittedly I stole it from my Etsy shop.. shhh..) I wish I had some modeled shots of this (though there is one of Munchkin in it on my Ravelry page) but its done nothing but pour here in GA. I love the colors and the way the yarn striped — its an incredibly geeky hat but I love it and can’t wait to wear it at the bus stop and to embarrass the living crap out of my mother-in-law this winter.

Fuji 041

These are also handspun yarn from roving I recently bought at CosyMakes shop – its a wool type called CVM and it was from a local Ohio farm. The gloves (armwarmers? mitts? I never know what to call these…) are my own half-assed pattern (that I used previously on the Maple Sky mitts ) which I had to rip out twice because clearly I cannot read my own writing. I’d love to keep these (and actually intended to when I spun the yarn) but they turned out a little too big for me and are destined for a new life for sale at Etsy.

And that, my friends… is all the news that’s currently fit to print.

I’ve had this object finished for almost 2 weeks now but I keep dragging on posting this up to the blog. This is the Lacy Starfish Snood by berrymama knit in less than 1 skein of Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece.  This skein of yarn (and the other Cotton Fleece in my stash) was bought years ago for the purpose of knitting Kyoto from Knitty…  but it looked hideous on me when nearly finished (it was a fit problem and a sleeve issue) and I never bothered to finish it.  This skein was an accent color that never got added.. but it makes a lovely hat and I’m glad I hung onto it.
Starfish Snood

I love this hat/snood and am definitely casting on another one in black shortly.  My only mod for next time will be to drop down another needle size for the ribbing because I’ve had to take it in from stretching and I have to pin it to keep it on.

I do love that it keeps all of my hair contained..  its very useful and pretty too!

mouse-081

Why is it called “starfish” snood? Check out the decreases in the back! How cool is that? (also.. my husband rocks at taking pictures. You should have seen the horrible photos I took in the bathroom)

orangerous

I’m in the middle of a ton of WIP’s right now – its the end of the year and I’m trying to crank out some teachers gifts (see: Kitchen Tribble scrubbers) and also get ready for the onslaught of May birthdays – SIL, Hubby, FIL & MIL are ALL May birthdays. I did however manage to make this silly, bright and clashy stuffed mouse toy from Stitch n’ Bitch Nation for a kitty named Jack. The stuffed mouse ended up being an R.O.U.S (rodent of unusual size.. for those who don’t love ‘ The Princess Bride’ as much as I do) because I used worsted weight instead of sport.

Some of you at this point are wondering… “Who’s this Jack she’s knitting for?”. Here’s a little picture gallery for you.

This is Jack playing with his new mouse…

cat-019

This is Jack sitting on the rug on my kitchen floor…

And this is Jack sleeping on my husband’s pillow on the bed….

cat-007

I’m sure you can guess where this is going.. right?? Yeah, Blog- Meet our new cat.. Jack. More accurately I should say, Blog- meet Ms. Kitty’s new cat.. since she’s the one responsible for bringing him home.

About 4 nights ago I heard a loud noise outside and ran out to make sure that Ms. Kitty (who is an indoor/outdoor cat) wasn’t in some sort of trouble and when I opened the door.. a very freaked out looking Ms. Kitty came plowing into me at about a thousand miles an hour.. followed by the kitty you see above.. followed by the biggest possum I’ve ever seen in my life. As my husband went to run the possum off, I reached down to pick up Ms. Kitty and take her in the house and this cat came right up and wanted to be petted! When hubby came back, the cat went over to him to be petted as well – and that’s when my husband- Mr ” no more pets EVER” – said ” he doesn’t seem to be sickly or have fleas, let’s let him inside and give him some food”. (*insert eye-roll here*) I opened the door so that Ms. Kitty could go inside and this little guy went running right after her! They’ve been following each other around the house and the yard ever since.. and my husband decided (with the help of Munchkin) that the cat’s name should be ” Captain Jack” – or ‘Jack’ for short. (His full name is something like “Captain Jack Skellington Sparrow Rackham Harkness” – if you’re really wondering. There are a lot of folks named Jack that we’re fond of around here.. lol) He is still a kitten, from the looks of him he’s about a year old or so… and he LOVES yarn.

I do wonder where Jack came from or how he came to be sitting at my front door.. which is why I’ve waited to write this post. I’ve done some asking around and no one seems to have ‘lost’ a kitty, I’ve let him in and out of the house as he pleased in case he wanted to go “home” (if he had a home), but so far there isn’t any sign of someone wanting to find this guy. There have been a lot of cases (I’ve heard from the owner of the small store down the road) of people dumping animals recently, and there have been a few local rental houses which have recently had people move out.. so I’m wondering if he’s simply been abandoned. We’ve lived here a year and have had our share of stray cats on the property but we’ve never seen this guy.

Morally, I do feel like I’m doing the right thing by not turning him into a shelter (because they are over-crowded, under-funded, and currently putting a LOT of animals down that aren’t being adopted) when even though we don’t have much money ourselves, I know that we can at least afford to feed him and give him a good home as long as we have a home ourselves. I’m going to be checking into low cost pet clinics and having the little guy checked over (which will also check to see if he has a micro-chip) as soon as possible now that we’re pretty sure that his new home is here at Chez Mousie. Besides, how could you say no to a face like that and those big ol’ paws??

Woolly Wormhead's Marina Hat

I *finally* finished this hat!! This has basically been my one and only WIP for the last few months but between wrist pain and daily life I haven’t had much actual time or urge to knit even though I REALLY wanted to wear this hat. I’m sad that I don’t have more time to wear it now that its finished because we’re sort of on the verge of spring here in GA… though I am sick to death of the cold.

As soon as Woolly Wormhead released this pattern I knew it was what I wanted to use this gorgeous skein of Malabrigo (colorway: purple mystery) which I got for my birthday from a friend who knows of my love of all things purple & Malabrigo. I cast on in November and the project sort of got worked a few rows here and there as I had the urge. I have to admit that life here at Mouse House has been chaotic and unbalanced since we moved last summer that I haven’t really had too much of an urge to knit.

I love this pattern and the charts (boy, I never thought I would say that…) that go with it… making the pattern and construction very obvious. As with a lot of WW’s other hat patterns, the Marina hat is also knit sideways and grafted at the end with a kitchner stitch. I probably overdid it in the push to get this finished last night and was a little brain dead when I got to the kitchner instructions because I mangled it pretty badly. This is NOT to say that WW’s instructions sucked.. because they didn’t (the in-pattern tutorial had both writing and photos) – I did one of those famous moves where you do what you THINK it says.. not what it really says to do. Once I stopped doing MY interpretation of the directions it went rather smoothly and I don’t think anyone will noticed the half-assed graft job because of the drop stitches.

Pattern: Marina Hat by Woolly Wormhead
Yarn: Malabrigo Worsted (purple mystery) -less than 1 skein (Ravelry says 164 yds & 74/100g)
Needles: size 7 bamboo straight needles
Mods: none unless you count my ‘creative’ kitchnering.

I’m sorry about the title to the post.. I’m thinking that the cold has finally made me lose what little sanity I have left.  Its been cold here in GA (30-40 during the day and 20′s at night) and I can’t seem to keep the house warm until about mid-day.   My husband just started a job which we are hoping will be a permanent thing (hooray!) but unfortunately the job involves traveling out of state.  We were told of his hiring on Thursday and he had to leave Saturday morning for a week in New Jersey… I sort of felt like he was being “shipped out” and it was very stressful. He will be home on Saturday or Sunday and I miss him horribly and really hate being alone.  Here are some more of my “photo a day” pictures from the last few days.  If you click on them they will get bigger (I think) – its the WP gallery function.

1/6/09-  Yeah,  I actually dress like this… especially when I’m home all day. I have on a Cure t-shirt, stripey grey & black socks, maryjanes,  black leggings, and a thrifted khaki skirt.   If I were actually going out of the house in this I would have worn my black pirate looking Airwalk boots with this and a black cardigan with pins all over it.

1/7/09-  This is the “falling leaves” handspun from the other post.. its actually a Targhee and Rambouillet mix, not Falkland. I have no idea why I thought it was Falkland. I ended up spinning this as a single – its about a worsted weight (I didn’t WPI it.. ) and I have about 160 yds.  I’ll be knitting this into armwarmers for sale later.

1/8/09- No, I didn’t knit this.  This is an insanely thin ( I think its lighter than laceweight) handknit shawl that I received from hubby’s Aunt at Christmas. It came from St. Petersburg and is some sort of a mohair blend. It is mostly khaki green with other colors in it..  I used a photoshop filter to boost the colors so that you could see them in the photo.  Even though it is beautiful it is also very itchy.. I am now nearly positive that I’m allergic to mohair.  Please excuse my nasty linoleum kitchen floor..  apparently no amount of scrubbing is going to help it.

1/9/09- This is Ms. Kitty on my lap – MOPING.  My husband rescued her as a kitten from a truck engine (this was before I was in the picture..) and fed her with an eyedropper — she is almost insanely possessive of him and is MISERABLE when he is gone.  She’s been moping since he left Saturday morning.

1/10/09- Look- I actually knit!  I’m working on this hooded scarf for sale, its stash yarn from my Willow Cardi.  I’ve been getting quite a bit of knitting done since I’ve been staying up WAY past my usual bedtime…

1/11/09- ‘Kung Fu Panda’ from NetFlix.  Munchkin and I watched it this weekend and it was so funny we saw it a few more times before sending it back. We’re hoping to get the new Mummy (Tomb of the Dragon Emperor) in tomorrow.

010309

Proof that I actually still spin.. its a Falkland blend called “fall leaves”. I’m spinning this as a single. I loved the roving but I don’t really love this spun up at the moment.  I have a second bump of this in Merino (they looked different on the website  and were called different colorways so I bought both.. I blame my shitty monitor, not the vendor- who rocks.) which I will probably sell off since it really doesn’t thrill me.   I’ll wait to put a sale price on it until I start knitting with this to see what happens… often times I change my mind after seeing how it looks in a pattern.

Finally got my Christmas present I ordered for myself… 4 back issues of Gothic Beauty Magazine. I really enjoy this magazine even though I don’t know most of the new goth bands that are out there (I prefer the older stuff like Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, and Rasputina).. and some of the fashion is a little much for me now that I’m 30. I do love the makeup and hair though.. and the ads for the websites are worth the cover price, especially since I picked these up in a bundle pack which saves me money.

010509

Playing a lot of Sims 1 – I am totally blaming this on Severina and her posts about gothic Sims (which I totally didn’t know were out there..  clearly this path leads directly to madness) and all of the cool free downloadable furnishings out there for dark creepy houses and creepy gothed out characters. I even have a household that includes a cyber-goth girl,  a Blue Man, and an Evil Scientist.   The goth girl and the Blue Man fell in love and got married, forcing her to become part of the family.. before it was just a totally silly Blue Man/Evil Scientist  bachelor pad.

* I’m trying out a 365 photo style spread here at Chez MousieBlog to keep myself active in  blogging.  I love photo blogs, some of my favorite reads are knitting/life blogs with mosaic photo collages  and  short descriptions.  I definitely won’t be posting every day but I’d like to post a few times a week so that the photos don’t get backlogged too badly.   I know that a lot of the folks doing the 365 photo project are using Flickr but I’ve yet to shell out the $24.95 for a pro account b/c of having my own webspace.. even though it would make my organizing of photos on Flickr much easier.

I’m having a hard time believing that 2008 is nearly over.. in one respect it seems like a whole year couldn’t possibly have passed and in another way this year seemed like it would never end.

2008fos

I’m seeing lots of impressive “finished objects of 2008″ recaps going on in Blogland but mine is rather dismal due to all of the money stress and moving that went on here at Chez Mousie this year. I only finished two pairs of socks (Avada Kedavra, Nanner Socks), 4 hats (slouchy copycat, LeSlouch, Hermione’s Hat, & my own “prototype hat”) 2 headbands (from IK, Dreamswatch) and about 12 washcloths for gifts. I did finish a bunch of handspun yarns and I’ll do a photo collage of those soon… I know that my wheel had a thick layer of dust on it for a good portion of this year and its one thing I’m going to try to remedy this coming year.

Emotionally this year has been a load of crap and I’m really glad that it’s over. I wasn’t able to write much due to all of the b.s that was going on here behind the scenes because I wasn’t willing to turn this into some sort of self-help blog. I’m looking forward to 2009 – there are already glimmers of good things on the horizon for the House of Mouse.

I wanted to thank everyone who has read and commented here on this blog throughout 2008. To all of the friends new & old — I hope everyone has a wonderful New Years Eve and is safe!! See you in 2009!

(I wrote this on Dec. 31 but forgot to hit publish.. I’m not entirely sure where the time stamp edit is on this newish version of WP that I upgraded to, so it might just have to stay improperly time stamped.)

A few weeks ago while trying to get ready for company to come I realized that it was a little chilly in the house (we were having an early cold snap) and maybe my guests would not prefer to have to wear a sweater indoors.. so I sucked it up and pushed the “heat” button on the thermostat for the first time since moving into the house. I waited and sat over the floor vents only to discover that COLD air was coming out!! I figured that maybe something hadn’t been properly turned on so I waited until hubby came home for him to ‘check’ the heater… he walked around and then crawled under the house to discover that not only was the furnace not working… it was NON EXISTENT! Yeah, turns out that we don’t HAVE central heating in the house – when the house was converted from gas to electric (for cooking, heating hot water, and logically HEATING..) the 50 year old gas heater was disconnected, capped off, and left to rust under the house. The living room fireplace and the wall mounted electric coil heaters which are in the bathroom, laundry room, and living room (that my MIL deemed “quaint”) are the only heating in the house! Uhm… yeah. Our landlord had no idea that there wasn’t central heat and since he’s not planning on continuing to rent this house after we leave (its going to be turned into a golf driving range in the future) he isn’t going to “waste” the money to put in heat. He did go out and buy us a nice electric heater to use, and the wall heater in the living room works very well (plus we do have acres of land and a fireplace) – so I think we should survive the winter. We do have 2 other (very safe) small portable electric heaters for Munchkin’s room and my husband’s office, and to be honest we’re really not in any position to move to another house anytime soon. We’ve lived in old, badly heated houses before and are well versed in the art of weather stripping windows, hanging quilts in front of them at night, and blocking off unused portions of the house with curtains to keep the heat in the living areas… plus, thankfully I know a little something something about making woolly stuff!

Its 35ºF outside right now (though thankfully it is a comfortable 65 in the house without the use of heat) and suddenly my whole household has decided that the wool slippers that I’ve offered in the past were JUST what they wanted to keep their feet snug and warm. *sigh* My husband has a pair of crochetted slippers somewhere but he can’t find them.. so I’ve gone stash diving and wrangled up a skein of olive drab Cascade 220 to make some Fuzzy Feet slippers for him. Munchkin has 2 pairs of ‘slipper socks” from Jane the Sock Queen (who was nice enough to give her accidentally felted socks to my son.. he LOVES them and they still fit great!!) and he requested a pair of fingerless gloves for in the house and at school.

So, as of right now I have Marina from Wooly Wormhead on the needles with 2 pattern repeats completed, queued up Small Fry Fingerless Gloves, and have one slipper zooming along on size 10 (6.0 mm) needles…  If anyone needs me I’ll be on the couch with a blanket and my knitting!

I wanted to pop in and wish everyone a Happy Halloween! MIL and I are taking Munchkin out trick or treating tonight in a friend’s neighborhood and we’re also going to go out to dinner somewhere for my birthday. My birthday was actually the 29th but everyone down here (aka. the inlaws) celebrates it on Halloween – which is fine because this year it means I’m celebrating being 31 (eep) on the 31st! Munchkin will be dressing up as Indiana Jones this year… we just have to stop at the thrift store sometime today and pick up a shirt – he’s already got the whip, hat, bag & pants. I wish I could say this was an inexpensive Halloween costume but sadly this is costume choice #2.. the first was a Star Wars Clone Trooper costume. Thankfully my son wears ALL of his Halloween costumes around the house for dress up play until he grows out of them, so it is at least going to see more than one night of use.

I’m always sort of back and forth about posting “look what I got” photos because in one way I LOVE to see what people buy, get, etc.. and in another way I feel like I’m “showing off”. Regardless.. here’s a photo of my new statue that I received from a friend which is now making my kitchen counter and “tea area” much prettier. Its a solar statue for the garden but with the temperature falling I thought it would be better to put it in my kitchen and use it as a night light! I also received a bag of llama roving, stitch markers, and a skein of mmmmmmalabrigo — thank you internet friends! Not pictured is a beautiful (and huge) set of Tibetan prayer flags which I haven’t gotten to hang up yet.. I’m thinking that I’ll string them across the living room for the winter.

In my blogging absence I’ve also  managed to finish another Malabrigo hat – this one is the Slouchy Copy Cat Hat. I am not sure whether I’m totally in love with this hat or not.. the color is a bit on the ‘blah’ side but the pattern was really easy to remember and I love the mock cables. My only issue with the hat is that the ribbing and the cables don’t line up..  I’m trying to ignore it.  As you can see I’m definitely on a Malabrigo & hat kick. I’ve wound the Malabrigo in the earlier photo into a ball and will be starting the Mystery Beret from Wooly Wormhead as soon as I figure out what I did with my size 7 circular needle.

I’m off to eat some cinnamon toast (the seasonal ‘Country Crock cinnamon spread” is out in the stores.. I love that stuff even though its probably HORRIBLE for you) and have another cup of tea while I ponder which restaurant I want to go to for dinner.  Happy Halloween everyone!

I recently finished this cowl/hood thing – I don’t even know what to call it. Basically its a garter stitch rectangle made with my handspun (Maple Skies.. the same stuff I used for the mitts in a previous post) with button holes on one end and buttons on the other. I added tassles and some crocheted embroidery with some white acrylic I found inside my button box… and I really love it. I love the fact that its open in the back since I wear my hair up in a bun most of the time.. its so hard to wear a hat with my hair up. I can also button both sides together and wear it as a cowl if my neck gets cold.

I can’t take credit for the idea.. I’ve seen it somewhere before on Ravelry though I can’t seem to find who made the original. (though if anyone has any idea where this comes from, let me know so I can add a link!)

EDITED TO ADD: (11-26-08) I’m adding in an ‘edit’ here because I found the pattern on Ravelry that “inspired” this hood : its the Twirly Girl Bonnet from CosyMakes. I knew that I had seen a handspun garter knit hood somewhere with embroidery but I couldn’t find it when I did a search. Turns out that aside from adding an extra button & button hole to wear the hood as a cowl that I had completely “ripped off” her pattern (even the embroidery is almost identical — doh) from her book (called “Knit One Embellish Too”) which has been on the top of my Amazon wishlist since I read about it in her blog (which seems like) ages ago — I’m still totally hoping to get it for Christmas. I love Cosy’s blog and her hand-dyed handspun which she makes her gorgeous hats out of and embroiders so creatively.. so I feel like sort of a dope for not realizing who’s design I was hijacking. Do go over and give her blog a visit — especially if you are a spinner!

I actually started another project last night while watching House (my newest tv show obsession– yeah, I’m usually WAY behind the trend on tv watching) since its getting cold already here in GA. I’m working on another slouchy hat (this time its the Slouchy Copy Cat Hat) in purple Mmmmmalabrigo yarn from my stash. I’m hoping to be able to buy another skein or two of Malabrigo for my birthday — which is coming up in 9 days. SAFF is next weekend but I won’t be attending.. its too far of a drive and I’ve already got plans with Munchkin to do fun Halloween stuff (costume contest, corn maze, and pumpkin carving) – I also really don’t have any money to spend at an event. I’m hoping to at least be able to go out for Indian food for my birthday… that would be a nice treat.

I finished this a while ago but in the mess of trying to figure out how we were going to pay our bills (and then how we were going to put gas in the car… have you seen the stupidity that is the situation with gas down here?? OMFG people.. there is NO gas ANYWHERE!! ) I sort of forgot to post about it… though I did put it up on Ravelry. My father-in-law asked me shortly before we moved if I would make him a hat that was tight fitting and covered his ears and the back of his neck without being bulky. It could NOT have earflaps or be “fancy” in any way and shouldn’t be “dorky”. I browsed patterns for MONTHS on Ravelry and didn’t find anything suitable for my father in law.. so I decided that I’d make my own pattern cobbled together from the best points of other hats I’ve knit in the past. Its knit flat from the bottom up in seed stitch and then joined in the round to form a tight fitting hat… worsted weight yarn on size 7 circular needles. Thankfully it fits my father in law (not pictured… *snort*) well.. because it looked terrible on everyone else in this house — I think because we all have WAY too much hair for a helmet hat.

Pattern: my own (will possibly be offered later if I can manage to write a proper pattern)
Yarn: LB Wool-Ease in Blue Mist -less than 1 skein
Needles: 7 US circulars (magic loop & 16 inch)

Nanner Socks- Finished!

*finished Nanner Socks*

Hooray.. finally a finished object! The weather has taken a turn toward being fall-like and I’m more motivated where spinning & knitting is concerned, not to mention that its very nice not to be sweating while knitting. The weather channel says that its 64 outside – I’m VERY happy! (not to mention that this cold wave will hopefully kill the fleas that have returned to the house and are biting me to death) Hubby is out in the woods behind the house right now gathering firewood (I think that’s what he said he was doing…) and we cleaned out the birds nest from inside the chimney in preparation for being able to use our great big fireplace soon.

These socks above are the Nanner Sock null pattern from Wendy Knits that was available only through Plurk. This is my first all over patterned sock and I think I got bit by the bug.. there might not be many more ‘plain vanilla’ stockinette socks in my future now! I really enjoyed the design stitch pattern (very easy to memorize) and it is helping me get my confidence on reading charts. The pattern itself was well written and easy to follow.. though I have to admit that I strayed off the pattern where the heel was involved. I personally don’t like flap heels.. they don’t fit me and I think they are WAY too bulky for my shoes, so I went with a no-hole short row heel and then continued on in the pattern. I also went up to a size 1 needle, did the sock Magic Loop, and made the smallest size.. which fits my nearly size 9 foot perfectly.

The yarn is (looks around for label… clicks over to Ravelry instead..) Lana Grossa Meilenweit 100 Bosco which was an inexpensive ($14.95 at my LYS which as sock yarns go is cheap…) yarn choice for a pair of socks that I wasn’t sure I was going to be finishing. I thought the pattern might be too complicated for me.. clearly I have no self-confidence. I also chose this yarn because I wanted something semi-solid so that I didn’t bore myself to tears (this colorway is actually wine with lines of slate gray and mustard yellow) and superwash because I seem to felt the crap out of all of my socks even if they ARE superwash (I think its that I wear clogs & boots) and I wanted something long wearing if I was going to go through all the trouble of knitting a fully patterned sock. I didn’t realize how stiff of a yarn this (though nowhere near as crunchy as Opal yarns, IMHO) was until I picked up my mom’s hidden cable socks (mountain colors bearfoot) but I didn’t really mind it while I was knitting.

Quick Project Stats:

Pattern: Nanner Socks by Wendy Johnson
Yarn: Lana Grossa Meilenweit 100 Bosco
Needles: size 1 Addi Turbo circulars throughout – knit Magic Loop
Mods: used short row no-hole heel instead of flap heel. Went up a needle size and knit the smallest size (58 sts) for my size 9 feet
Knit it Again? yup! kept me occupied and I love the pattern stitch. I would make these again.

The weather here in Georgia has been gorgeous for the last week- in the mid 70′s and overcast- thanks to the tropical storms. While I feel like I’ve done nothing but open and close windows (not an easy task in an old house) because of the wind & rain – I’m loving the cool breeze and lots of curling up on the couch with a cup of hot tea and some knitting. Fall weather puts me in a crafty mood and I’m doing a lot of knitting & spinning lately (plus some other stuff) in preparation of re-opening my Etsy shop. While I will still be doing the knitting & spinning supplies, I’ve also wanted to introduce a line of hand knits made with my own handspun into the shop.. which required the creation of some patterns of my own.

These mitts are the product of my hit or miss pattern making skills – which apparently involve a whole lot of ripping, swearing, use of a calculator, more swearing, and prayer – and I’m pretty happy with them. They have right & left thumb gusset increases which I think helps to make a better fitting hand area.. something I’ve really had issue with in some of the patterns I’ve knitted for myself and ended up ripping out or giving away. I think its partially because I have larger hands and very slender wrists that many of the popular armwarmer/mitt patterns out there end up making me look like I had giant man hands even though they were perfectly gorgeous on 1500 other knitters.

The hands in the photo belong to my mother-in-law who agreed to play hand model for me the other day. I had to pry these mitts off of her hands because she first tried to run away with them and then tried to con them out of me as a Christmas present. The yarn is my own Two Paws Handspun in Spunky Eclectic “Leaf Peep” colorway & South African Fine wool. I like to re-name my yarns when I spin them because I find that the colorway that was given as roving changes into something else after spinning… but I haven’t come up with a name for this yarn yet. The mitts themselves will be going into my shop when I open in September.. unless MIL comes and steals them back!
